Australian alcohol guidelines

The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) released the current Australian Guidelines to Reduce Health Risks from Drinking Alcohol in 2020. To reduce the risk of harm from alcohol-related disease or injury, healthy men and women should drink no more than 10 standard drinks a week and no more than 4 standard drinks on any one day. The less you drink, the lower your risk. Full details are on the NHMRC website at nhmrc.gov.au.

What is a standard drink?

In Australia, a standard drink contains 10 grams of pure alcohol. A standard drink of spirits at 40% ABV is about 30mL, but higher-strength whiskey means fewer millilitres per standard drink. A 30mL pour of a barrel proof Jack Daniel's Single Barrel contains well over one standard drink. Jack Daniel's Old No.7 is 40% ABV, Gentleman Jack 40%, Single Barrel Select 45%, Bonded 50% and the barrel strength single barrels above 60%. The number of standard drinks is printed on every bottle label.

Adding a splash of water or ice opens up the flavour and slows the pace. Our guide to drinking Jack Daniel's explains how.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding and under 18s

The NHMRC guidelines advise that people under 18 should not drink alcohol, to reduce the risk of injury and other harms to health. To prevent harm to an unborn child, women who are pregnant or planning a pregnancy should not drink alcohol, and for women who are breastfeeding, not drinking is safest for the baby.
